What does CBT entail?

In CBT, clients and therapists work together to understand a persons life experiences have shaped how hey think about themselves, others and their future and shaped how they cope with life. It looks at how the relationship between our thoughts,  feelings, and behaviours, and how this contributes to keeping current difficulties going.

CBT looks to specifically target and change negative and unhelpful thoughts,  beliefs and assumptions, and the unhelpful behaviours and coping strategies  that maintain a problem. Sometimes we may also decide to focus on healing the distressing memories connected to a clients past if they impact on their current difficulties.

The number of CBT sessions required during treatment will depend on a clients needs and the level of complexity and severity of  their problems. Home practise of skills learnt during therapy sessions will help a client get the most out of sessions.
